1854
Im Jahr 1854 begann der Bau der ersten transatlantischen Telegraphenkabellinie. Der Bau dauerte vier Jahre und die Lagerung erfolgte auf der „Agamemnon“ aus Großbritannien und der „Niagara“ aus den USA. Diese Boote wurden von den beiden Regierungen finanziert.
Obwohl es sich um ein großes Ereignis handelte, das einen wichtigen Eindruck in der Geschichte hinterlassen hat, scheiterte das Projekt aufgrund technischer Probleme schnell. Es hat nur drei Wochen gedauert, aber es hat gezeigt, dass es möglich ist, so etwas zu erreichen.
1866 war das Projekt abgeschlossen und die Kabel waren voll funktionsfähig. Es blieb fast ein Jahrhundert lang in Betrieb.

1876
Im Jahr 1876 stellte Alexander Graham Bell auf der Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia offiziell einige Prototypen von Telefonen vor. Dies war die erste Weltausstellung in den USA und Bell wurde augenblicklich ein weltberühmter Erfinder.

1885
Das Jahr, in dem die American Telephone and Telegraph Company gegründet wurde. AT&T hieß zunächst Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, doch als Bell sich mit Thomas Sanders und Gardiner Hubbard zusammenschloss, benannten sie das Unternehmen um.
AT&T ist immer noch ein aktives Konglomerat und eines der größten Telekommunikationsunternehmen der Welt.
